Which type of poetry do you prefer to read or compose? Some people like more traditional poetry with structure, meter and such. Some prefer the more modern version of free verse because lack of structure gives them more freedom to express themselves.

I personally prefer traditional poetry. I believe that structuring raises poetry from art to craft. Structure challenges the poet's skills and allows him/her the opportunity to really showcase their talent. I also feel it adds to the beauty of the poem. Setting the meter can be the difference between a sad poem and dark and dreary poem. Or it can take a poem expressing happiness and transform it into one of joy. By changing the meter the poet can alternate between emotions and truly manipulate the reader giving them a roller coaster ride through many emotional experiences.

These are just my thoughts. What do you think?

I agree to a point.
In my opinion there is a difference between free verse, modern poetry, traditional poetry, and structured poetry. I see traditional poetry as a poem in the style emulating the classic masters, Poe, Dickenson, even Homer if you want to try for an epic. But modern poetry can be something such as spoken word, or something as simple as a structured poem utilizing slang vocabulary. Free verse has many examples in more traditional poetry in the last hundred years, and even free verse tends to keep to some kind of rythym. Personally, I tend towards a more structured type of poem, mostly because I find working with free verse more difficult to produce something of quality. Using Free verse the poet has to pay far more attention to the more subtle influences they are trying to portray, or risk the poem losing all impact and coming across as expression rather than impression. Structure such as rhyming schemes, meter, stanza makeup, rythym, flow, all of these things are tools we can shape the poem with. Working without those tools is more difficult for me, but I still tend towards a more modern type of poetry.

the thing is, I'm sort of a begginer. So I prefer to write free verse, because it is a lot easier to write. I do some stanza's. But they're not as good as my free verses. But when I read traditional, I like it because it has rythym that I probably couldn't make.

I am a novice when it comes to writing but I love to read traditional poetry (like Poe), I actually prefer free verse, but when I write alot of times I find myself using a strange combination of different styles into one singular thought. I normaly write on a whim when emotions are high, or the wound is fresh. I find trying to structure, ryhme the rabid spectrum of emotion I feel is very difficult.
